Owens was thrust into a starting safety spot when Darnell Savage suffered a calf injury in Week 7, and he's been productive thus far. In the four games that Owens has started, he's recorded 28 total tackles, including one sack, while also forcing a fumble and breaking up one pass. The 28-year-old is likely nearing the end of starting on Green Bay's defense with Savage designated to return from injured reserve, but he might have earned more snaps going forward as a rotational defensive back with his play the last four weeks.

Packers' Jonathan Owens: Set for expanded role
Owens is set to move into a starting role at safety after the Packers placed Darnell Savage (calf) on injured reserve Wednesday, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reports.
Owens will now have an expanded role for at least the next four weeks until Savage is eligible to return. The 28-year-old will likely find himself playing on a near-every-down basis in the Green Bay secondary and could prove to be a useful IDP option. With the Texans last season, Owens appeared in all 17 games and tallied 125 tackles, good for second in the NFL among all non-linebackers.

Packers' Jonathan Owens: Headed to Green Bay
The Packers signed Owens on Friday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.
Owens played more snaps on special teams than defense over his first three NFL seasons, but the undrafted product out of Missouri Western earned a full-time role at safety in 2022 and finished second on the Texans with 125 tackles to go along with four pass defenses and a sack. Adrian Amos remains a free agent and Darnell Savage was benched last year, so the Packers are expected to have an open competition for both safety spots in 2023. Given Owens' standout campaign last year, he figures to be the favorite for a starting spot over the likes of Rudy Ford, Tarvarius Moore, Tariq Carpenter and Anthony Johnson, though he'll have to prove his 2022 production wasn't a fluke.
