Mark Mathias: Heads to open market
Mathias (shoulder) elected to become a free agent Friday. Mathias rejected an outright assignment to Triple-A Sacramento after being pushed off the 40-man roster by San Francisco on Wednesday. The utility player went 14-for-62 (.226) with a .591 OPS in 27 major-league games this year between the Pirates and Giants before suffering a season-ending shoulder strain in mid-August.... Giants' Mark Mathias: Outrighted to minors
The Giants sent Mathias (shoulder) outright to Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday. Mathias slashed just .226/.333/.258 across 72 plate appearances in the majors this season, and a strained shoulder put an early end to his season in mid-August. Mathias will have the option to elect free agency and should be able to draw a minor-league deal in the offseason.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Mark Mathias: Moved to 60-day IL
San Francisco transferred Mathis (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. Mathis was diagnosed with a right shoulder strain last week and is officially done for the remainder of the 2023 regular season. Kyle Harrison will fill the vacated 40-man roster spot as he prepares to make his major-league debut Tuesday night in Philadelphia.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Mark Mathias: Placed on 10-day IL
Mathias, who had been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, has the transaction reversed and he has instead been placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Aug, 14 with a right shoulder strain, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The 29-year-old utility man went 2-for-10 during his recent eight-day stint with San Francisco. Mathias is on his fourth organization of the year, having been DFA'd by the Rangers and Pirates earlier in 2023 and spending July at the Triple-A level with the Mariners before being acquired by the Giants.... Giants' Mark Mathias: Optioned to Sacramento
The Giants optioned Mathias to Triple-A Sacramento on Monday, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Mathias went 2-for-10 with four strikeouts during his eight-day stay on San Francisco's major-league roster. Johan Camargo will fill his spot ahead of Monday's series opener against the Rays.... Giants' Mark Mathias: Called up Sunday
Mathias was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. Mathias was acquired by the Giants ahead of the trade deadline and will now receive his first look with the big club. The 29-year-old played in 22 games for the Pirates earlier in the season and had a .231/.355/.269 slash line in 62 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Giants' Mark Mathias: Traded to Giants
Mathias was traded from the Mariners to the Giants on Monday along with designated hitter AJ Pollock and cash for a player to be named later, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Mathias was claimed off waivers by the Mariners on July 2 and AJ Pollock might be seen as a negative value contract, so there likely won't be a notable prospect headed back to Seattle. Mathias, who turns 29 on Wednesday, is a career .249/.323/.402 hitter with six home runs and seven steals in 68 big-league games. He'll likely report to the Giants' Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento.... See More ... See Less -
Mariners' Mark Mathias: Lands in Seattle
The Mariners claimed Mathias off waivers from the Pirates on Sunday and optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma. The 28-year-old will join the fifth organization of his career after prior stops with Cleveland, Milwaukee, Texas and Pittsburgh. Before being cast off the Bucs' 40-man roster, Mathias saw action in 22 games at the big-league level this season and slashed .231/.355/.269 across 62 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Mark Mathias: DFA'd by Pittsburgh
Mathias was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Sunday. The 28-year-old was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis last week and has now lost his spot on Pittsburgh's 40-man roster. Mathias could remain with Indianapolis if he passes through waivers unclaimed.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Mark Mathias: Dispatched to Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Mathias to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. Mathias has managed a meager .624 OPS across 22 games with the Pirates this season. He'll move off the 26-man active roster as the Pirates clear a spot for top prospect Henry Davis, who will make his MLB debut Monday versus the Cubs.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Mark Mathias: Scores twice, steals two bags
Mathias went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two walks and two stolen bases in Monday's win over Oakland. Mathias picked up his first MLB hit since May 7. He bumped his slash line up to .273/.385/.318 with five runs scored and an 8:9 BB:K through 52 plate appearances. He's appeared in two games since being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Mark Mathias: Back up from Triple-A

Pirates' Mark Mathias: Heads to Triple-A
The Pirates optioned Mathias to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic reports. Mathias will cede his spot on the active roster to fellow right-handed-hitting utility player Chris Owings, who was called up from Triple-A. He's managed just a .695 OPS in 15 games with the Bucs this season.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Mark Mathias: Making push for starting job
Mathias went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a stolen base in Friday's 4-2 win over the Reds. Making his eighth start of the season at second base, the 28-year-old got the Pirates on the board with a two-run single in the second inning before swiping his first bag of the year in the sixth after reaching on an error. Mathias has racked up seven hits in his last three games to push his batting average to .286 (8-for-28), and with Rodolfo Castro needed at shortstop, he has an opening to seize the starting job at the keystone over Ji Hwan Bae if he stays hot at the plate.... Pirates' Mark Mathias: Collects four hits
Mathias went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI in Monday's 14-3 win over the Rockies. Mathias was in a 1-for-15 skid to begin his Pirates career before knocking four singles Monday. He's made six appearances - all at second base - since being recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on April 10. The 28-year-old is now hitting .250 at the MLB level this season.... See More ... Pirates' Mark Mathias: Called up from Triple-A
The Pirates recalled Mathias from Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. Mathias will give the Pirates another infielder, with Oneil Cruz (ankle) on the shelf for a while. The 28-year-old Mathias was acquired from the Rangers during spring training after a productive stretch for Texas last year over an abbreviated stretch. According to Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com, Mathias is expected to start at second base Monday against the Astros, and he'll also be an option at third base and in the corner outfield while he's up with the big club, though he won't necessarily fill Cruz's spot in the lineup on an everyday basis.... Pirates' Mark Mathias: Sent to Triple-A
Mathias was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Monday. As the Pirates thin their major-league roster out ahead of Opening Day, Mathias will make his way to Indianapolis. The 28-year-old produced a .222 average with a double, two RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases over 18 at-bats in eight games this spring. After signing a contract with the Pirates this offseason, Mathias will have to prove himself at the Triple-A level before he'll get a shot at the big leagues.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Mark Mathias: Could get starts at keystone
Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Tuesday that Mathias is in consideration for starts at second base, Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com reports. Mathias was just acquired from the Rangers last Wednesday for a player to be named later and has already made a strong impression during his short time in Pirates camp. Shelton noted that the second base competition is wide open at the moment and also suggested that Mathias could be an option in the corner outfield. The 28-year-old put up an .825 OPS in 91 major-league plate appearances last season between Milwaukee and Texas.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Mark Mathias: Dealt to Bucs
The Pirates acquired Mathias from the Rangers on Wednesday in exchange for a player to be named later. Texas moved Mathias off its 40-man roster over the weekend, but the 28-year-old utility man was quickly able to find a new organization. Mathias hit well at the Triple-A level and down the stretch with Texas last season, but his track record suggests that his hot run at the plate is unlikely to carry over into 2023. He'll compete for a reserve role with the rebuilding Pirates.... See More ... See Less
