Mozambican police are searching for a kidnapped businessman of Asian descent in Maputo. The abduction occurred near the Bazar Central on Saturday afternoon. Authorities report a history of kidnappings targeting businesspeople, urging community assistance in investigations.

Mozambican authorities are actively searching for a businessman of Asian descent who was kidnapped in downtown Maputo on Saturday. The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) have appealed for public assistance in gathering information related to the abduction, which occurred around 3:00 p.m. at the entrance of the Bazar Central, a local crockery store.

Kidnappings in Mozambique have surged since 2011, primarily targeting businesspeople and their families, often of Asian descent. This demographic significantly influences commerce within urban centers throughout Mozambique. The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique has noted that around 150 individuals have been kidnapped in the last twelve years, prompting many to leave the country due to insecurity. Former attorney general Beatriz Buchili highlighted that most kidnappings are orchestrated from outside Mozambique, especially from South Africa.

The ongoing efforts of Mozambican police to locate the kidnapped businessman reflect a broader issue of increasing kidnappings in the country. Public cooperation has been sought to deter criminal activities that increasingly threaten business communities, particularly those of Asian ancestry. Vigilance and community action may play roles in addressing this troubling trend.
