Tanzanian Agritech Startups Triumph in AYuTe Africa Challenge, Securing Grants
Three Tanzanian agritech startups secured $22,500 in grants during the 2025 AYuTe Africa Challenge, showcasing innovative solutions for agriculture. In the 2025 AYuTe Africa Challenge Tanzania, three youth-led agritech startups won a total of $22,500 in grants, announced by Heifer International Tanzania. This competition showcased innovative solutions addressing major agricultural challenges in the country. Innovations included strategies for reducing post-harvest losses, pest management solutions, affordable animal feed production, and drone technology for soil analysis and fumigation.
The challenge received over 260 applications from across Tanzania, emphasizing technologies that support smallholder farmers, who contribute to 80% of the nation’s agricultural output. Under the theme “Empowering Generations: From Legacy to Innovation,” the recent Demo Day highlighted various agricultural value chain issues being tackled by these startups. This reflects the increasing involvement of youth in transforming Tanzanian agriculture through inventive approaches.
MIL – Animal Nutrition emerged as the overall winner, receiving a $10,000 award for its cost-effective animal feed solution. This product is particularly beneficial for dairy farmers, especially during the dry seasons. The first runner-up, Mbeya Oil Cado, was awarded $7,500 for producing cooking oil from avocado rejects, with markets established in Kenya, South Africa, and the UAE.
Dry Food, the second runner-up, received $5,000 for its method of reducing tomato post-harvest losses by converting them into tomato powder. During the event, Prof. Riziki Shemdoe from the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries praised the collaboration between Heifer International and Sahara Ventures, stressing the initiative’s importance in engaging youth and enhancing food production for smallholder farmers.
Mark Tsoxo, country director of Heifer International, stated that the AYuTe Africa Challenge serves as a catalyst for promising agritech startups, empowering young entrepreneurs to leverage innovation in smallholder farming. He remarked, “By providing access to finance and strategic support, we empower young entrepreneurs to turn groundbreaking ideas into sustainable solutions.”
The ongoing support from Heifer International and partners aims to assist all finalists in deploying and scaling their agritech solutions. The AYuTe Africa Challenge Tanzania is part of Heifer’s AYuTe NextGen initiative, which accelerates agritech startups through grants, mentorship, and training, ultimately benefiting smallholder farmers to increase resilience and income.
