28 Migrants Found Dead in Libya: Investigations Underway

The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office has discovered 28 bodies believed to belong to irregular migrants near Kufra while rescuing 76 others from forced detention. Three individuals are set for interrogation, and a criminal investigation has begun involving Coast Guard members accused of smuggling. Meanwhile, Egypt’s crackdown on illegal migration continues with the arrest of numerous irregular migrants.

The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office reported the recovery of 28 bodies presumed to be irregular migrants near a detention center in southeastern Libya. This discovery occurred north of Kufra, coinciding with the rescue of 76 migrants from forced detention. Forensic experts have been consulted to analyze the cause of death, and testimonies from the rescued individuals are being documented. Authorities are set to interrogate three suspects, including two foreigners and a Libyan national.

In a previous case, the Public Prosecutor’s Office opened a criminal investigation against the head of the Coast Guard in Zuwara city. Four Coast Guard members were arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle 37 irregular migrants across the Mediterranean, which included firing at police during the operation. Following their interrogation, the suspects are being held in custody as investigations continue.

The Libyan Ministry of the Interior has also reported the arrest of numerous Egyptian irregular migrants, who were subsequently handed over to Egyptian authorities. This operation is part of ongoing security measures aimed at combating irregular migration. The Joint Security Room’s patrols in the Western Mountains area managed to apprehend multiple illegal migrants and recover stolen vehicles.

Egypt has implemented stringent laws to penalize individuals involved in illegal migration activities, integrating tougher security measures along its borders and coastlines to deter migration attempts. This approach signifies an increased effort to prevent illegal crossings to Europe and enhance border security controls.
