This Moroccan earthquake followed a 5.9-magnitude quake in Vanuatu, also on the same day. The epicenter of the Vanuatu quake was Port-Vila, situated at a depth of 18 kilometers (around 11.9 miles). Notably, the Vanuatu earthquake happened shortly after a significant 7.6-magnitude earthquake was reported in the Cayman Islands on February 8.

Specifically, the Cayman Islands quake was centered in George Town at a depth of 10 kilometers (about 6.2 miles). Following this event, a tsunami alert was issued for the Mexican coastline but was retracted within two hours, according to the USGS.

Monitoring information stated, “With the latest modeling and information, the tsunami threat has passed. There are no alerts posted for the United States or International Partners. Unusual currents may be noticed in some areas. Exercise normal caution,” which was communicated by the National Weather Service Warning Center.

Prior to these events, California experienced a 3.4-magnitude earthquake in Petrolia on February 7, occurring at a depth of 10 kilometers (approx. 6.2 miles). This was preceded by a smaller 2.9-magnitude quake in the same location a day earlier, as well as a 4.3-magnitude tremor in Alaska on February 5, centered in Sustina.

The recent seismic activities include a 5.1-magnitude earthquake in Morocco and significant quakes in Vanuatu and the Cayman Islands. Authorities provided updates on tsunami threats, which were ultimately deemed to have passed. Numerous smaller earthquakes have also occurred in California and Alaska, emphasizing the ongoing seismic activity in various regions of the world.
