Morocco plans to lead in electric vehicle production, aiming for end-to-end manufacturing capabilities, including raw material extraction and vehicle assembly. The government is also investing in electric buses, with a target of 7,000 units to modernize public transport and cut pollution. These initiatives align with Morocco’s goal of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2030.

Morocco aims to position itself as a leading nation in electric vehicle (EV) production and sustainable transportation. The Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, revealed that the country plans to establish a comprehensive EV manufacturing process, encompassing the entire supply chain—from extracting raw materials to battery production and vehicle assembly. This initiative not only targets domestic production but also positions Morocco as the sole manufacturer in the Euro-African region capable of producing electric vehicles from the ground up.

The government’s strategy includes the mining of essential materials such as phosphate and cobalt, crucial for battery components. By 2030, Morocco anticipates that this concerted effort will triple its export capacity. To complement its vehicle manufacturing plans, the government is also investing in electric public transportation by procuring 7,000 electric buses, with an initial order of 1,300 already placed.

Morocco is committed to enhancing its transportation sector in preparation for the upcoming 2030 FIFA World Cup, integrating greener alternatives to reduce pollution and modernize transit infrastructure. Additionally, officials are focused on developing high-powered electric buses locally, which are currently priced between $180,000 and $200,000 each. Through these initiatives, Morocco aims to achieve its long-term goal of zero carbon emissions.

In conclusion, Morocco’s ambitious plans for electric vehicle production and the expansion of green transportation signify a strategic move toward sustainability. With the intent to establish a complete manufacturing cycle and enhance public transportation systems, the country is on track to boost its exports and reduce carbon emissions. The focus on electric buses and the upcoming FIFA World Cup highlights Morocco’s commitment to modernizing its transport infrastructure.
