Renault and Geely are negotiating a partnership to expand their presence in Brazil, with plans to utilize Renault’s retail network for Geely-branded car sales. Geely may also gain a minority stake in Renault Brazil and utilize local facilities for vehicle assembly. This move aims to boost capacity at Renault’s plant and enables Geely to enter new markets with its vehicles amidst rising trade competition.

Renault and Geely, the French and Chinese automakers, are negotiating a partnership to boost their operations in Brazil. Sources indicate that an announcement regarding a preliminary deal is expected later this month. The collaboration will extend their existing joint ventures, previously formed for manufacturing thermal engines and vehicles in South Korea, to the South American market, allowing both firms to tap into new growth opportunities amid increasing global trade tensions.

The proposed arrangement would enable Geely to utilize Renault’s Brazilian distribution network to sell Geely-branded vehicles exported from China. In addition, Geely is expected to acquire a minority ownership stake in Renault Brazil and assemble vehicles at the Curitiba facility. However, details regarding the magnitude of this investment are still unclear, and both companies have chosen to remain silent on the negotiations.

This collaboration aims to enhance production efficiency at Renault’s Brazilian plant, which is crucial in diversifying Renault’s market portfolio beyond Europe. For Geely, the deal provides a means to penetrate the Brazilian market amidst fierce price competition domestically and high tariffs impacting the export of Chinese vehicles to developed nations.

Brazil has emerged as a key market for Chinese electric vehicle (EV) exports, showing remarkable growth. Last year, exports of EVs and hybrids from China to Brazil surged more than double, reaching approximately 152,000 units. This trend aligns with Geely’s strategic interest in diversifying its market presence, where Brazilian consumers now rank as the second largest market for Chinese new energy vehicles, following Belgium.

Within this partnership, Geely plans to sell vehicles under its own brand in Brazil, which contrasts with its current collaboration in South Korea that exclusively focuses on a Renault model. Technical aspects of utilizing Renault’s Brazil plant are under development, including Geely’s potential establishment of a multi-energy platform, which would allow for the production of gasoline, hybrid, and electric vehicles.
