A British team of endurance riders recently traced the historic path of T.E. Lawrence, or Lawrence of Arabia, across Saudi Arabia and Jordan. Beginning in Al-Wajh, their expedition mirrored the route taken during the Arab Revolt in World War I, spanning 25 days and covering over 1,100 km. The journey not only tested their endurance but also aimed to reconnect with history through significant sites.
The riders included Howard Leedham, Martin Thompson, Craig Ross, Mike Baker, and James Calder, all of whom are former British military personnel. Inspired by Lawrence’s famous camel trek, they trained ahead of the expedition in Tabuk and sought adventure and historical insights, visiting critical locations mentioned in Lawrence’s writings.
In their quest, the team crossed diverse terrains such as salt lakes, deserts, and mountains, facing tough challenges, particularly early in the expedition when navigating through difficult landscapes. Leedham noted the beauty of the scenery, stating, “It’s like somebody painted it.” They meticulously followed the original route, using technology to aid their navigation but often encountering limitations.
They obtained necessary permits to cross the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve and King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Nature Reserve. The riders managed an ambitious target of covering 50 km daily and shared breathtaking experiences along the way.
