Heavy Rainfall and Significant Snow Forecasted in Morocco

Morocco’s meteorology office has issued alerts for snowfall and heavy rain on Tuesday and Wednesday. Areas above 1,800 meters may receive up to 30 cm of snow, while several regions forecast 15-35 mm of rain. These conditions arise amid a persistent drought, highlighting the challenges of water scarcity in the region.
The Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology has issued an orange-level weather alert for snowfall and heavy rain affecting multiple regions on Tuesday and Wednesday. Snow accumulation is anticipated to range between 2 to 30 centimeters in areas above 1,800 meters, particularly in provinces such as Beni Mellal, Azilal, Al Haouz, Ouarzazate, Midelt, and Tinghir, where the most significant snowfall is expected.
Additional forecasts indicate that Boulemane, Ifrane, and Khenifra will see snowfall between 10-15 cm, while Figuig, Taroudant, Sefrou, and Chichaoua may experience 2-8 cm of snowfall. The snow is expected to commence at 3 p.m. on Tuesday and persist until 9 a.m. on Wednesday, bringing impactful weather conditions.
In conjunction with snowfall, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms will hit several areas. Regions including Al Haouz, Ifrane, Khenifra, Azilal, Beni Mellal, and Sefrou are expected to receive 20-35 millimeters of rain between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Safi and Essaouira face impending rainfall of 15-25 mm between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, adding to the wet conditions.
Similar rainfall levels of 15-25 mm are projected for regions such as Midelt and Errachidia from 6 p.m. on Tuesday to 6 a.m. on Wednesday. Recent weeks have shown a decline in temperatures across the country, with intermittent rain and snow, but the precipitation alone may not suffice to resolve Morocco’s ongoing water crisis, exacerbated by six consecutive years of drought.
Meteorological alerts indicate that Morocco will experience significant snowfall and heavy rainfall across multiple regions, with the potential for accumulations affecting daily life. Despite these weather events, the ongoing drought condition presents a challenge, suggesting that this precipitation may not provide adequate relief from water shortages.
