Nigeria has demanded an investigation into the suspicious death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer who died in Uganda. Initially thought to have died in a motorcycle accident, investigations now suggest he fell from a shopping mall balcony. The Nigerian government, through NiDCOM, is monitoring the investigation closely to ensure justice is served.

The Nigerian government has requested an investigation into the death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer who played for Uganda’s Vipers SC. Lawal tragically died on February 24, 2025, with initial reports attributing his death to a motorcycle accident on Entebbe Road. In contrast, subsequent police findings suggest he may have fallen from a shopping mall balcony, prompting further inquiries into the matter.

Lawal was reportedly on his way to a training session when the incident occurred. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), described the situation as “pathetic and suspicious” and called for a thorough investigation without any cover-up. Following this, the Nigerian Embassy in Uganda has formally requested an autopsy and a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death.

As stated by NiDCOM, the Nigerian government is committed to ensuring justice is served, closely monitoring the investigation. The local police, specifically from Kajjansi Police Division, reported that Lawal fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade. He had visited the mall to meet a friend, Tanzanian national Omary Naima, before the tragic incident occurred.

According to Naima, she left Lawal preparing tea in their room before heading to a game center within the mall. Shortly after, at approximately 8:00 am, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony and was thereafter rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital where he was unfortunately pronounced dead. Items belonging to Lawal, such as smartphones, shoes, and other personal effects, were found in his backpack.

Authorities are currently retrieving CCTV footage and conducting comprehensive interrogations to clarify the exact circumstances of this unfortunate death. The investigation aims to uncover the truth behind Lawal’s untimely passing and ensure accountability wherever necessary.

The demand for an investigation into Abubakar Lawal’s death highlights concerns over the circumstances leading to his demise. The Nigerian government is actively involved, ensuring that no stone is left unturned in the pursuit of justice. With varying reports emerging, authorities are working to unveil the truth through thorough inquiries, making it imperative that the investigation remains transparent and accountable.
