The Nigerian government is urgently seeking a thorough investigation into the suspicious death of footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda, who fell from a shopping arcade. The call for transparency arises from concerns voiced by officials, including the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission. Preliminary reports indicate Lawal was visiting a friend when the incident occurred, and investigations are ongoing.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has demanded a comprehensive investigation into the death of footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda. Lawal, who played professionally for Vipers Sports Club, reportedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala. Concern over the circumstances of his death prompted the Nigerian government to take action.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, voiced her concerns regarding the incident through a statement by NiDCOM’s spokesperson, Abdur-Rahman Balogun. Dabiri-Erewa highlighted the suspicious nature of the circumstances surrounding Lawal’s death, calling for transparency in the investigation and asserting that there must be no attempts to cover up the details involved.

She noted that Nigerian High Commissioner to Uganda, Ambassador Shama Shanga, has insisted on a complete autopsy and thorough inquiry into the events leading up to Lawal’s death. Dabiri-Erewa expressed her deep sadness and emphasized the urgent need for a thorough investigation.

Preliminary reports from Ugandan authorities indicate that Lawal had arrived at the shopping arcade to meet a friend, Tanzanian national Omary Naima, who had been staying in the mall since February 20, 2025. After leaving Lawal in their room to prepare tea, Naima went to a nearby game center, during which time Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony at around 8:00 AM.

Despite immediate medical attention upon being rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, Lawal was declared dead upon arrival. Ugandan police have since recovered several of Lawal’s personal belongings, including smartphones, a training kit, and other items found in his black backpack, as part of the investigation.

Law enforcement is reviewing CCTV footage and conducting interviews to gather further information. The Nigerian government has committed to ensuring that the investigation is transparent and thorough, while also extending condolences to Lawal’s family. Dabiri-Erewa concluded by wishing peace for Lawal’s soul and strength for his grieving family.

The request for a thorough investigation into Abubakar Lawal’s death underscores serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident. The Nigerian government, alongside Ugandan authorities, is committed to uncovering the truth while ensuring transparency. Those responsible will be held accountable, and the investigation aims to clarify the events that led to this tragic situation.
