Fire Outbreak at University of Ghana Estate Block Managed by GNFS

On February 26, the GNFS extinguished a fire at the University of Ghana’s Estate Block. The fire started around 9:00 PM, resulting in damage to numerous fridges and freezers. A total of 5,596 fire incidents were recorded in 2024, reflecting a 6.43% increase, raising concerns about safety regulations and public awareness.

Officers from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) successfully extinguished a fire at the University of Ghana’s Estate Block in Accra on February 26. The incident occurred around 9:00 PM at a warehouse located near the popular Bush Canteen. Firefighters managed to control the blaze in under an hour, employing tenders from Madina and Abelemkpe to mitigate risks associated with the flammable materials present.

DOI Alex King Nartey reported that the fire was 90% contained by his team, with four fire tenders on site to prevent further spread. The incident resulted in the destruction of approximately 20 fridges, freezers, and spare parts. This fire is part of a worrying trend, as fire outbreaks have become increasingly frequent across the country

In early incidents this year, significant fires occurred at the Agbogbloshie Market and Kumasi Magazine. The GNFS has reported 5,596 fire incidents in the first eleven months of 2024, marking a 6.43% increase from the same period in 2023. The escalation in outbreaks has raised alarms among the public and authorities alike.

Factors contributing to these incidents include adverse weather, public non-compliance with fire safety regulations, road accidents, and electrical faults. Chief Fire Officer Julius Kuunuor highlighted these issues during a service themed “Be an Agent of Peace.” He also expressed condolences for the 37 officers who lost their lives by December 18, 2024, due to fire-related incidents.

The GNFS continues to tackle the rising issue of fire outbreaks across Ghana, highlighted by a serious incident at the University of Ghana. The increase in fire outbreaks calls for heightened fire safety awareness among the public. Effective intervention and compliance with safety measures are essential in mitigating such occurrences moving forward.
