Nigeria Seeks Investigation into Footballer Abubakar Lawal’s Death in Uganda
Nigerian authorities are demanding a thorough investigation into the suspicious death of footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda. The Nigerian government has called for a comprehensive investigation into the death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer who died under suspicious circumstances in Uganda. Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), expressed concern over Lawal’s demise, emphasizing the need for clarity in the investigation. The Acting Nigerian High Commissioner in Uganda, Ambassador Shama Shanga, has also requested a full autopsy and thorough inquiry into the incident.
Lawal, a professional footballer for Vipers Sports Club, died after reportedly falling from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade on February 24, 2025. Preliminary information indicates that he had come to meet a friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national. Naima stated that she left Lawal preparing tea in her room while she went to a game center, and shortly after, he fell from the balcony around 8:00 am.
He was promptly transported to Entebbe Referral Hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival. Various personal items belonging to Lawal were recovered from his backpack, including smartphones, open shoes, a training kit, and chargers. Authorities are currently gathering CCTV footage and conducting interviews to clarify the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
