A police officer assigned to the security detail of South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir was arrested on the evening of February 25 after allegedly shooting a fellow officer. While on patrol near the presidential residence in Gigiri, Nairobi, officers discovered the suspect smoking what appeared to be bhang and attempted to confront him. Upon being approached, he fled, disobeying commands to stop, and allegedly fired at the officers, injuring one of them in the hip.
The officer in question, a member of the General Service Unit (GSU), was subsequently apprehended, and his firearm, a Ceska pistol, was confiscated. He is currently detained at the Gigiri Police Station. The injured officer has been admitted to MP Shah Hospital where he remains stable, although a bullet fragment is lodged in his thigh.
This incident follows a recent shooting involving another officer, Constable Raphael Kimilu Wambua, who was shot dead by a colleague after a disagreement outside a bar in Ruaraka, Nairobi County. This escalation in violent incidents among police personnel raises concerns about internal discipline and operational conduct within these security forces.
The recent shooting incident involving a police officer in South Sudan’s Kiir security detail underscores troubling patterns of violence among security personnel. As arrests are made and investigations proceed, it is essential to address the underlying issues contributing to this violence and ensure accountability among law enforcement officers. The health of the injured officer remains a priority as authorities aim to prevent further occurrences. Moreover, this incident highlights the need for improved training and support systems within the police to mitigate risks associated with similar altercations and to maintain public trust in law enforcement.
