UAE Owners Target Electric Propulsion and Digitalisation in Maritime Sector
The UAE’s marine sector is shifting towards electric propulsion and enhanced digitalisation for sustainability. Abu Dhabi Ports Group launched Bu Tinah, the world’s first all-electric tugboat, exemplifying this transition. ADNOC Logistics is also adopting hybrid technologies and digital tools to reduce emissions and improve efficiency. Owners of marine services and terminal operations in the Middle East are increasingly investing in electric propulsion and digital technologies to enhance sustainability. In stark contrast to other regions, the Middle East’s response to global decarbonization pressures has been slower. However, Abu Dhabi Ports Group is making strides by introducing its first all-electric tugboat, Bu Tinah, marking a significant shift towards greener maritime operations.
Bu Tinah, the world’s most powerful electric tugboat, launched in 2024 at 27 meters, equipped with an impressive average bollard pull of 78 tonnes and operated at Khalifa Port. Built by Damen Shipyards as part of the innovative Damen RSD-E 2513 design, it showcases the powerful combination of electric-hybrid propulsion systems and energy storage, signifying a step towards reduced emissions.
The tug is outfitted with advanced technology, including electric engines and backup generators, with plans for shore power charging to further enhance its green credentials. AD Ports Group’s CEO, Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, stated, “This record achievement demonstrates the transition to alternative energy does not come at the cost of performance.”
In January 2025, Safeen Green, an unmanned survey vessel powered entirely by renewable energy, was also introduced, contributing to the reduction of emissions to just 10% of a conventional vessel. Additionally, innovative underwater vehicles were launched, enhancing operational capabilities for inspections and subsea operations.
The corporate restructuring at AD Ports led to the rebranding of Safeen to Noatum Maritime, increasing the company’s operational capabilities across 33 terminals in over 50 countries. According to CEO Mohamed Juma al Shamisi, this integration is pivotal for positioning AD Ports for diversified growth in the global market.
Noatum has expanded its fleet with the addition of a new tugboat, Igriz, designed for shallow water operations, and has further extended its tugboat services internationally, including Mauritius. The company aims to streamline operations and enhance its competitiveness in the logistics sector.
AD Ports also inaugurated CMA Terminals at Khalifa Port, significantly increasing container capacity and securing multiple concession agreements to expand operations across the region, including in Egypt and Pakistan. These strategic investments position AD Ports at the forefront of global trade, emphasizing economic diversification and sustainability.
ADNOC Logistics & Services is exploring the implementation of hybrid-electric propulsion systems for its fleet to reduce environmental impacts. Plans are in place to develop utility vessels powered by a combination of electric-diesel systems, showing the company’s commitment to innovation in marine operations.
