Hundreds of holidaymakers are experiencing disruptions due to a Class 3 cyclone warning issued by the Mauritius Meteorological Service. Air Mauritius announced the closure of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport on Wednesday following the alert. Six cyclones are currently tracked in the southern hemisphere, including Cyclone Garance, which poses a significant threat as it is located 390 km from Mauritius.
Travel plans between Mauritius and South Africa have been heavily impacted, with Air Mauritius cancelling all flights until the airport reopens. South African Airways (SAA) also cancelled flights in both directions on Tuesday. Flight Centre indicated they had 249 travelers scheduled to travel to Mauritius in the upcoming fortnight and are actively monitoring the situation.
According to Lynette Machiri from Flight Centre SA, updates on the weather are being closely monitored, and hotels are working to accommodate guests affected by disruptions. Some accommodations are providing extended stays, while travelers are advised to contact their travel advisors regarding rebooking and insurance claims for additional incurred costs.
Otto de Vries, CEO of the Association of Southern African Travel Agents (Asata), expressed disappointment over the airport’s temporary closure, which has caused uncertainty for passengers. Air Mauritius is allowing passengers to change travel dates without incurring fees for travel until March 31, while SAA offers re-accommodation options on its flights and partner airlines, including FlySafair. Customers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with airline policies and rebooking regulations as they navigate these changes.
