INAM predicts the development of tropical storms Honde and Garance, likely leading to strong winds and rainfall in the Mozambique Channel. Cyclone Honde is near Inhambane while Cyclone Garance is moving east, posing no threat to Mozambique. INAM advises safety precautions, particularly for maritime navigation.

The National Institute of Meteorology (INAM) anticipates the development of two tropical cyclones, named ‘Honde’ and ‘Garance,’ over Madagascar from Thursday to Friday. These systems may produce strong winds in the Mozambique Channel, with Cyclone Honde currently positioned about 250 km off the coast of Inhambane province, moving southward. It is forecasted to intensify into a tropical cyclone on Friday, potentially bringing moderate to heavy rainfall across parts of Mozambique.

Meteorologist Lelo Tayob noted that while Honde is at sea, its size affects atmospheric circulation, generating rainfall; thus, rainfall could be experienced on mainland Mozambique due to shifting air masses. Tropical Storm Garance, located to the east of Madagascar, may also evolve into a tropical cyclone; however, it poses no risk to Mozambique due to its trajectory. Tayob emphasized Garance’s considerable distance and movement, stating, “If [Garance] did cross, it would have a direct impact on the channel and part of our continent.”

Despite no major threat from Garance, INAM recommends implementing safety measures in relation to maritime navigation, considering the potential adverse conditions generated by the cyclonic activity in the region. The agency advises vigilance as atmospheric conditions may still result in rainfall across land areas due to the influences from the oceanic systems.

In summary, INAM’s forecasts indicate the formation of two cyclones, Honde and Garance, with potential rainfall effects in Mozambique due to cyclonic activity in the Mozambique Channel. While Honde may impact the country indirectly, Garance’s movement poses no threat. Authorities encourage maritime safety amidst these weather phenomena.
