Shooting Incident Involving GSU Officer at South Sudan President’s Residence

A GSU officer was arrested after injuring a colleague in a shooting incident outside South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir’s Nairobi residence. The suspect attempted to flee when approached by police, resulting in gunfire. Meanwhile, another officer was killed in a separate incident, emphasizing ongoing issues with police conduct and firearm safety.
On February 25, a police report detailed an incident where GSU officer attempted to escape from patrol officers who had spotted him outside the residence of South Sudan’s President, Salva Kiir, on Gigiri Road. The officers suspected him of smoking cannabis and approached for questioning. Instead of cooperating, the officer fled and allegedly fired at them, injuring one officer in the right hip.
The injured officer was promptly taken to MP Shah Hospital for treatment, where doctors reported that he is in stable condition, although a bullet remains lodged in his left thigh. The suspect, identified as a GSU officer, was arrested after police confiscated his official Ceska pistol and detained him at Gigiri Police Station.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another shooting event involving a police constable assigned to a high-profile CEO’s security detail. On February 22, Constable Raphael Kimilu Wambua, also from the GSU, was shot dead during a dispute with a fellow officer outside a bar in Ruaraka. The confrontation escalated into violence, leading the suspect to fatally shoot Wambua in the altercation.
Authorities have since transported Wambua’s body to Kenyatta University Mortuary, while the suspect involved in the shooting is receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. Both incidents highlight ongoing concerns regarding firearm safety and conflict resolution among officers in the line of duty.
In summary, the shooting incident involving a GSU officer outside the residence of South Sudan’s President raises serious concerns regarding officer conduct and safety. The injured officer is stable, while the suspect has been arrested. This incident follows another tragic shooting involving a police constable, underlining the need for improved conflict resolution measures within the police force.
