On Saturday, China’s media remained silent regarding the recent confrontation between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, Chinese state media emphasized the Russian response to the incident, drawing from Russian sources. The state broadcaster, CCTV, reported that Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, criticized Trump’s handling of the situation, stating that he did not scold Zelensky sufficiently during their altercation.
The meeting aimed to finalize an agreement between Ukraine and the US regarding the exploitation of Ukraine’s critical mineral resources. This deal was intended to mitigate Chinese dominance in the supply chain for these minerals. However, the anticipated signing was disrupted by an unexpected shouting match between Trump and Zelensky, leading to the cessation of negotiations on the deal.
CCTV also quoted Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian foreign ministry, who remarked on Trump’s restraint in not physically confronting Zelensky during their heated exchange. She expressed surprise at how, despite the escalating confrontation, Trump and his aides refrained from violence.
The confrontation between Trump and Zelensky not only derailed a crucial deal but also drew significant attention from Chinese media, reflecting geopolitical tensions. The incident has been framed by Russian officials as a cautionary tale about the risks of relying on the US for security, emphasizing the complexities of international relations amidst ongoing power struggles.
