Charlotte last contacted a friend on February 8, mentioning she was in Sao Paulo, Mexico, and intended to travel to Rio de Janeiro. After failing to reach her following that exchange, worried family members contacted her friend days later. Police reported her missing on February 17, with the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in Brazil expressing their concerns in a public statement.

Charlotte, a freelance journalist featured in Al Jazeera and The Times, had not informed her family about her trip to Brazil. Her father, Derek, expressed unease over her uncommunicative behavior, indicating that he suspected she may have been troubled. Derek stated, “There was something on her mind obviously otherwise she would have let us know,” emphasizing their concern for her well-being.

Authorities indicated that Charlotte is alive, having tracked her movements with her phone’s GPS. Detectives revealed she arrived in Rio on February 8 and stayed in a Copacabana hostel until February 17. CCTV footage showed her participating in hostel activities, handing in bed sheets, and she was reported to have relocated to another hostel thereafter.

New photographs were released, including two of Charlotte on a bus to Rio and one at a beach bar in Leme, reportedly taken on February 8 and February 15, respectively. Police Chief Elen Souto noted, “The main line of investigation is voluntary disappearance,” while detailing Charlotte’s dual phone numbers, one of which does not accept calls.

Her most recent known location before her disappearance was Morro de Babilonia, where Charlotte had engaged in voluntary work. Despite these concerns, prior to her disappearance, she had posted on Facebook regarding room rentals in London, stating she was looking for suitable accommodations in various areas, emphasizing her friendly and organized nature.
