ATCN Launches Festival of Motorsport to Boost Grassroots Engagement in Nigeria

The Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN) plans to promote grassroots motorsport development through the Festival of Motorsport 2025. The event will provide training and competitive opportunities for participants of all ages while fostering talent development in various disciplines. The ATCN’s collaboration with Motorsport Nigeria Ltd and the FIA emphasizes a structured approach towards increasing participation and industry growth in Nigeria.
The Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN), established in June 2009, aims to advance motorsport development in Nigeria, alongside promoting road safety, environmental awareness, and health services. Ishaku Bamaiyi, the ATCN Founder/President, announced plans for the Festival of Motorsport 2025, scheduled in April, which he believes will mark a significant growth phase for the sport in the country. The ATCN is recognized as the sole Nigerian representative of several international motorsport organizations, including the FIA and FIM.
As part of their strategy, the ATCN has signed an agreement with Motorsport Nigeria Ltd, which is empowered to enhance motorsport in Nigeria. This collaboration requires all competitors to obtain licenses and participate in mandatory training programs, which can be completed online or in person. The body is also developing a digital app to facilitate training.
The Festival of Motorsport will encompass diverse motorsport disciplines, providing avenues for participants to demonstrate their skills. Opportunities include roles such as competitors, officials, marshals, and various technical positions, appealing to a wide range of interests and talents. Bamaiyi highlighted that this initiative aims to equip Nigerians with the skills necessary for international competitions.
The festival will cater to young participants aged 4 to 17, aligning with the National Sports Commission’s objectives to foster youth engagement in sports. Previous efforts by ATCN did not require financial commitments from participants, showcasing a commitment to grassroots development without economic barriers. Bamaiyi emphasized the potential economic impact of this initiative on the Nigerian economy and motorsport industry.
To further support the development of motorsport, the FIA appointed the Emirates Motorsport Organization as a training provider for Nigeria, implementing programs designed to cultivate talent. Notable initiatives include the Young Driver Programme and the FIA Girls on Track project, aimed at promoting inclusivity in motorsport.
Since the FIA World Motorsport Council approved the FIA Motorsport Games, Nigeria has begun participating in international events, including the upcoming 2024 competition in Spain. The ATCN’s participation underscores the commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s presence in global motorsport as well as securing recognition in various competitive categories.
The ATCN’s initiatives, particularly the Festival of Motorsport 2025, are set to drive significant advancements in grassroots motorsport development in Nigeria. By facilitating training, promoting inclusivity, and creating varied opportunities for participants, the ATCN aims to cultivate a vibrant motorsport culture that can compete on an international level. This strategic approach is designed to enhance not only the skills of participants but also the economic landscape surrounding motorsport in Nigeria.
