British Roofer Arrested for Smuggling Drugs in Croatia

A British roofer was arrested in Zagreb for smuggling 39 bags of marijuana from Thailand. Authorities discovered over 23 kg of drugs in his suitcase. Initially claiming ignorance, he later stated he was coerced into carrying the drugs. He is currently in custody awaiting trial.

A 21-year-old British roofer was arrested at Franjo Tuđman Airport in Zagreb, Croatia, after allegedly attempting to smuggle 39 bags of drugs from Thailand. His suspicious black suitcase was flagged during an X-ray scan and subsequently inspected by police using sniffer dogs, which led to the discovery of over 23 kg of marijuana.

The man, who claimed ignorance regarding the contents of his bag, is now under investigation for drug smuggling. He had traveled from Thailand to Istanbul before arriving in Croatia. Upon investigation, the authorities found 39 vacuum-sealed bags containing plant matter, which tested positive for THC, the active component in marijuana.

During questioning at the police station, the roofer reportedly retracted his initial claim of ignorance and instead alleged that he was forced to carry the drugs. Subsequently, he was presented to the Velika Gorica Municipal Prosecutor’s Office. The judge advised that bail should not be granted due to the potential flight risk posed by the defendant being a foreigner.

The roofer is currently in custody while awaiting trial, which is expected to take place in about a month. In Croatia, involvement in growing, selling, or distributing cannabis can result in a minimum three-year prison sentence.
