His statements underscore the potential within the country to challenge established African teams.
Dr. Opoku-Antwi, the owner of Spintex Knights basketball team, believes Ghana possesses the talent necessary to build a competitive national team. He emphasizes that establishing a formidable basketball squad necessitates time and financial backing. With adequate support, he envisions Ghana evolving into a significant player in African basketball.
In his interview on Sports Check with GhanaWeb TV, Opoku-Antwi pointed out that Spintex Knights competes effectively against top teams in Africa, indicating that a well-assembled team of Ghana’s best players could rival existing giants on the continent.
He stated, “We can start gradually if there’s funding. We can even begin with local players because when we travel to Nigeria, we beat all their teams. Spintex Knights don’t have all the best players in Ghana, so imagine if we put all the top players together to compete against Nigeria, we would demolish them.”
Opoku-Antwi further stressed the importance of a gradual approach to development, advocating for the cultivation of local talent before integrating international players. He remarked, “I believe we can start with a local national team and build from there because, at the top level, we will need to bring in some of our players from abroad to compete.”
Dr. Opoku-Antwi advocates for the development of Ghana’s national basketball team through strategic investment and the harnessing of local talent. He believes that with the right funding and a focus on assembling the best players, Ghana can establish itself as a competitive force in African basketball. His insights highlight the necessity of nurturing local players while also considering the inclusion of international talent to enhance team performance.
