Darlington College Students Discover Thai Culinary Arts in Bangkok

Darlington College students benefited from a 15-day culinary trip to Thailand, where they honed their cooking skills and cultural awareness. Funded by the Turing Scheme, the experience included learning at Suan Dusit University and culminated in an Asian-themed buffet to share their newfound skills with the community.

Students from Darlington College had the opportunity to enhance their culinary skills during a 15-day trip to Bangkok, Thailand, inspired by the local cuisine. Eighteen Level 2 and 3 catering students, along with three staff members, participated in this hands-on experience funded by the Department for Education’s Turing Scheme. The trip, which took place at Suan Dusit University, aimed to refine their cooking abilities and expand their cultural understanding.

Upon completing the program, students received certificates as part of the London-Bangkok World City Links initiative focused on Traditional Thai Cuisine. Tina Snowball, a mature student and staff member, expressed a deep connection to Thailand, contemplating retirement there due to its affordability, welcoming locals, and vibrant culinary scene. She noted her passion for cooking was significantly enhanced by the experience.

Another student, 17-year-old Alisha Goddard, shared her enthusiasm for the trip, stating her reluctance to return home to the UK. She was inspired to pursue work abroad, potentially on cruise ships, fueled by her exposure to Thailand’s distinct culture.

Darlington College lecturer, Dawn Cobb, praised the adventure, emphasizing the students’ eagerness to experience Thai food culture. The trip was characterized as both educational and enriching, further strengthening ties between students and Thai culinary traditions.

In sharing their newfound skills, the students will host an Asian-themed buffet on March 11 at the Glasshouse Restaurant from 6:30 PM.
