Kenya Met Forecasts Heavy Rainfall Over the Weekend Across Eight Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department warns of heavy rainfall from March 7 to 11 in several regions. Areas affected include the Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, and parts of the Coast. Sunshine will precede the rains, which may also feature isolated storms. Meanwhile, North Eastern counties will remain sunny with temperatures over 30°C in most regions.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory for several regions over the weekend, from March 7 to March 11. The weather forecast indicates moderate to heavy rainfall across eight specific areas: the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Central and South Rift Valley.
In addition to these regions, rain is also anticipated in the Coastal Region, the Southeastern Lowlands, the Northwest, and southern Coast areas. The Kenya Met noted that most of the country will initially experience dry and hot conditions before rainfall begins from the weekend onward.
“This will likely include isolated storms during this period, especially over the weekend,” warned the meteorological department. The Highland East Counties, including Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, and others, can expect moderate to heavy rainfall starting Saturday afternoon, following the hot weather on Friday.
Heavy rains are also anticipated from March 9 to March 12 in counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, and others, similarly predicting rainy conditions for counties like Nakuru, Narok, and Bomet. Conversely, the North Eastern region, which includes Marsabit, Mandera, and others, is expected to remain sunny throughout the weekend.
High temperatures above 30°C are predicted in most areas, except for regions in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, where temperatures should remain below that threshold. Strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s) are also expected in parts of Northwestern and Northeastern Kenya.
The Kenya Meteorological Department has indicated that Kenyans should prepare for significant rainfall over the upcoming weekend. Heavy rains are expected in multiple regions, contrasting with sunny conditions in the North Eastern areas. Residents should be aware of both rainfall and high temperatures, particularly noting the weather variability across the country.
