Morocco Anticipates Severe Weather with Heavy Snow, Rain, and Winds

Morocco’s DMN forecasts severe weather, including snow, strong winds, and heavy rain from Saturday to Monday. Key areas are expected to see significant snowfall, while rainfall totals may reach up to 130 millimeters, raising concerns over infrastructure safety amid recent floods. A tragic incident has led to public outcry for accountability regarding safety measures.
Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) has issued warnings for severe weather conditions expected in several provinces, including heavy snow, strong winds, and significant rainfall, from Saturday to Monday. Snow accumulation of 35 to 60 centimeters is anticipated over regions above 1,500 meters, impacting areas like Ifrane, Azilal, Beni Mellal, and Midelt. An orange alert indicates that 25 to 35 centimeters of snow will also affect Al Hoceima, Chefchaouen, and surrounding provinces.
Rainfall is another concern, with forecasts predicting 80 to 130 millimeters from Saturday midnight to Monday morning. The Tangier Asilah region, alongside Chefchaouen, Tetouan, and others, is expected to experience thunderstorms and hail. Additional rainfalls of 40 to 70 millimeters are anticipated for M’diq-Fnideq and Beni Mellal, among others, while Essaouira and surrounding areas may see lower totals of 25 to 35 millimeters.
Winds reaching 70 to 95 kilometers per hour are forecasted to affect regions including Chefchaouen, Al Hoceima, and Tanger-Assilah from Saturday at midnight through Sunday evening. This strong wind pattern will also impact a broad range of provinces such as Rabat, Casablanca, and Ouarzazate. Similar conditions are expected in the eastern regions like Taourirt and Zagora during the day on Saturday.
Though rainfall is welcomed due to the ongoing dry season, there are rising concerns over infrastructure vulnerabilities, as recent floods impacted several provinces, leading to tragic incidents. A recent flood in Berkane resulted in the death of a 9-year-old girl, reigniting discussions about the lack of safety measures in place during construction activities. This tragic event has led to calls for legal accountability for those responsible for such oversight.
Morocco is bracing for severe weather that includes heavy snow, rain, and strong winds, with significant accumulations expected across various provinces. While the rainfall is appreciated given the dry conditions, recent events have highlighted the urgent need for improved infrastructure safety. Citizens are now advocating for accountability in the tragic incidents caused by inadequate safety measures during severe weather conditions.
