Tayali Urges Finalization of 16th Protocol for TAZARA Revitalization

Zambian Transport Minister Frank Tayali has advocated for the completion of the 16th protocol to revamp the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA). His discussions with Chinese officials highlighted past progress and the importance of future cooperation. The Permanent Secretary noted the need to transition from the 15th protocol to the 16th, strengthening operational frameworks.

Frank Tayali, the Transport and Logistics Minister of Zambia, has urged the immediacy of finalizing the 16th protocol for technical cooperation aimed at revitalizing the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (TAZARA). During a recent meeting with Chinese Embassy Economic Counsellor, Jin Jun, Tayali praised the collaborative efforts by both Tanzania and Zambia in strengthening TAZARA.

Permanent Secretary Fredrick Mwalusaka emphasized the need to update from the current 15th protocol to the necessary 16th protocol to enhance TAZARA’s operations. This transition is critical for the railway’s future and its service to the region.

Counsellor Jin Jun expressed China’s willingness to engage in discussions about the 16th protocol. He welcomed feedback on the technical cooperation agreements, confirming that they remain open for renegotiation, and showed appreciation for the input received from the Tanzanian government last year.

The call for the 16th protocol aims to reinvigorate the operational framework of TAZARA, crucial for both Zambia and Tanzania. The sentiments expressed by Tayali and Mwalusaka highlight the collaborative spirit needed in addressing the challenges faced by the railway and fostering cooperation with China.
