Germany Calls for Peaceful Solutions Amid Escalating Violence in Syria
Germany urges all factions in Syria to prevent further violence after over 200 deaths in recent clashes. On March 8, 2025, Germany’s Foreign Ministry issued a call urging all parties involved in the ongoing conflict in Syria to avoid a “spiral of violence.” This plea followed two days of intense fighting that resulted in over 200 casualties, primarily between government forces and fighters loyal to ousted president Bashar al-Assad.
Recent reports indicate that supporters of Syria’s new authorities launched attacks on villages in the coastal region, historically a stronghold for Assad, as retaliation against previous assaults on government security forces. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported enormous losses, with the German Foreign Ministry expressing shock over the situation and emphasizing the need for peaceful resolutions, national unity, and inclusive political dialogue.
The violence was sparked by a series of ambushes targeting transitional government security forces, particularly on the west coast. The SOHR confirmed over 200 fatalities, including at least 50 members of government forces and 45 loyalist fighters, as well as around 140 victims of revenge attacks.
In an effort to address the crisis, Defense Ministry spokesman Hassan Abdel Ghani announced that government forces had regained control of areas previously attacked by insurgents. Additionally, Anas Khattab from Syria’s General Intelligence Service alleged that former leaders from Assad’s regime were orchestrating these hostile acts.
Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa, leading the rebel faction that overthrew Assad, publicly urged pro-Assad fighters from the Alawite community to surrender for their own safety. He emphasized the government’s commitment to regulating weapons and eliminating unregulated arms from the populace. The ongoing clashes represent the most severe violence plagued Syria since the Islamist group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, toppled Assad’s regime in December.
