Deployment of 10,000 Electric Vehicles in Nigeria’s North-East

The Tinubu administration is launching a mass electric vehicle initiative in Nigeria’s northeast, with nearly $100 million in contracts approved for buses, tricycles, and charging infrastructure. Key suppliers have been contracted to deliver 10 buses and 4,000 tricycles, among other electric vehicles, with funding from the North East Development Commission to promote energy efficiency and reduce emissions.

The Tinubu administration is set to launch a mass electric vehicle project in northeast Nigeria. The Federal Executive Council has recently overcome the final barriers to begin this initiative, approving nearly $100 million for contracts that include electric buses, tricycles, and the necessary charging infrastructure.

Contracts approved encompass the supply of ten 17-seater electric buses from Bluecrest Integrated Concept Limited, scheduled for delivery within six months at a cost of N2.9 billion. Furthermore, Mutual Commitment Company Limited will deliver 4,000 electric tricycles for N49.6 billion, and Shanghai Integrated Infrastructure Development is contracted to provide 3,000 tricycles for N37.2 billion.

In addition to these suppliers, Sinoma Investment International Limited will also provide another 3,000 e-tricycles, each capable of accommodating nine passengers, plus a driver. HNCEGC is tasked with supplying 100 BYD Dolphin EVs, 100 BYD Qin Plus EVs, and 37 BYD Yuan Plus EVs for N16.3 billion, while KB Laman Motors Nigeria Limited will establish charging points for the e-vehicles at a cost of N8.4 billion.

These contracts will be financed by the North East Development Commission, aiming to enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions in the region. President Tinubu had earlier approved these procurements in October last year, ensuring the feasibility of this electric vehicle initiative by inspecting vehicle samples and charging equipment.
