The Ashaiman Circuit Court, presided by His Worship Mr. Derrick Parden Eshun, sentenced 20-year-old scrap dealer Tahiru Issah to 12 months in prison with hard labor for stealing. His guilty plea to the theft charge came during his court appearance on March 5, 2025.

Prosecutor Chief Inspector Henry Tetteh Nartey stated that Tahiru, a Nigerien residing in Ashaiman’s Fitter Line, was spotted by police on February 26, 2025. During a night patrol, they found him with a black polythene bag containing heavy items.

Upon inspection, police discovered six stopcocks, six safety valves, and one return valve from Ghana Water Limited, valued at GHS 3,250. Tahiru was arrested and taken to the Afienya Police Station, where he confessed to stealing the fittings from local residents.

Chief Manager Dr. Samuel Eson of Ghana Water Limited expressed appreciation for the court’s ruling. He noted an increase in meter thefts recently, which has harmed operations. Dr. Eson urged local residents to be vigilant and report suspicious activities, warning that thieves would face severe legal consequences.

In conclusion, the court’s decision to impose a 12-month sentence demonstrates a stringent response to theft affecting essential service providers like Ghana Water Limited. The case also highlights the broader issue of increasing theft of utility fittings, calling for community vigilance and collaboration with law enforcement to prevent further incidents.
