Seven bags suspected to contain cocaine were discovered in a diplomatic vehicle belonging to Sierra Leone in Guinea. Authorities in Guinea detained the vehicle and its occupants, suspecting them of having illegal drugs. Following this incident, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, swiftly requested the return of Sierra Leone’s ambassador, Alimamy Bangura, from Guinea for explanation in Freetown. Kabba emphasized that there is no indication that the ambassador was involved in drug trafficking, as he was not present in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Alongside the suspected drugs, approximately $2,000 was also found, although specific weights of the contraband were not disclosed. Both countries have initiated a deep investigation into the matter, with officials affirming that anyone involved in violating Sierra Leonean and international drug trafficking laws will face legal repercussions. Kabba asserted that actions against illegal drug trade are being taken seriously and offenders will face strict consequences.

Southern Africa is a significant route for cocaine trafficking from South America to Europe, which remains one of the main markets for illegal drugs. However, there is also a notable domestic drug abuse issue within Sierra Leone, particularly with substances like Kush, a mix of various illicit drugs. People are urging the government for assistance in combating drug abuse, which has become a pressing issue in the country, highlighted by President Julius Maada Bio last month during his address.
