North Korea has launched ballistic missiles amid paused US-South Korea military drills. On Monday, North Korea launched unidentified ballistic missiles, according to South Korean military sources. The missiles were detected around 1:50 PM, originating from the Hwanghae region of North Korea and heading towards the Yellow Sea, as reported by Yonhap.

This missile test coincided with the commencement of South Korea and the US’s annual joint military drills called the ‘Freedom Shield’. However, these exercises were temporarily halted following a significant incident in which two KF-16 fighter jets inadvertently dropped eight MK-82 bombs on a civilian area during training operations, leading to injuries of 29 individuals, including 15 civilians.

In response to the accidental bombing, South Korea’s Air Force commander publicly apologized, acknowledging that such an incident “should never have happened.” General Lee Young-su emphasized the need to prevent future occurrences during a press briefing, according to Yonhap.

North Korea has condemned the US-South Korea joint exercises, decrying the drills as provocative. Pyongyang issued statements warning that both Seoul and Washington would face severe consequences for these actions. In prior instances, North Korea conducted strategic cruise missile tests, reflecting their focus on nuclear deterrent capabilities, highlighting the ongoing tensions in the region.
