President Trump has been pressuring President Zelensky to agree to a rapid ceasefire without an immediate US security commitment.
In February 2022, Russia commenced a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, currently occupying approximately 20% of its territory. A senior State Department official stated that the involvement of top US officials suggests Ukraine is ready to engage in talks. Although President Zelensky is scheduled to meet Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, he is not formally participating in discussions with the US.
Representatives from Ukraine include Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak, alongside national security and military ministers. Zelensky highlighted the importance of these talks, expressing hope for both peace and continued support from allies. Rubio had previously met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Saudi Arabia just prior to tensions rising following the US-Ukraine altercation.
