A police officer in Niger state is under scrutiny for allegedly shooting and killing a man named Sani Khalid in the Anguwan-Kaje area of Minna. Khalid, a businessman and footballer, was reportedly resting outside when the incident occurred. Witnesses indicated that the police, seemingly intoxicated, opened fire without provocation, resulting in Khalid’s death.

According to local residents, Khalid was sleeping outside his home when a team of police officers emerged from a nearby bar. One officer allegedly opened fire, hitting him fatally. Following the initial shot, a second was directed towards a tea seller nearby, who managed to escape unharmed. A community member expressed shock at the unprovoked nature of the shooting.

After the shooting, witnesses returned to find Khalid already deceased. Reports suggest that the officers involved were intoxicated at the time, with evidence provided, including a bullet casing and an empty bottle of Gulder beer. Amid public outcry, police spokesperson SP Wasiu Abiodun acknowledged the occurrence and confirmed investigations were underway to identify the officer responsible for the shooting.

The Commissioner of Police in Niger, Shawulu Ebenezer Dammam, has instructed the Divisional Police Officer of Maitumbi to probe the incident further and ascertain the details surrounding the shooting. As of now, the police command is gathering evidence and will keep the public informed regarding the developments of the case.
