Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in Saudi Arabia to discuss resolving aid pauses to Ukraine with officials, exploring Ukraine’s possible concessions. The focus is on diplomacy rather than mineral deals, despite the U.S. interest in Ukraine’s resources.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for talks aiming to address the pause in aid to Ukraine. The discussions with Ukrainian officials are intended to explore possible concessions Ukraine may consider. Rubio emphasized that while Ukraine is receiving defensive intelligence, resolving the broader aid pause is crucial.

Rubio noted that the approach will not involve detailed military plans but will instead focus on understanding potential concessions from Ukraine. He stressed there is no military solution to the ongoing conflict, requiring both Russia and Ukraine to negotiate difficult compromises.

During his visit, Rubio met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who also held discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Rubio will partner with U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz for the negotiations with a Ukrainian delegation that includes key officials such as the Foreign Minister and Defense Minister.

Trump is reportedly interested in linking further military aid to the access of Ukraine’s mineral resources, crucial for the U.S. economy and defense. However, Rubio clarified that the negotiations regarding mineral resources won’t be the primary focus, stressing the need for specifics rather than a general understanding.

He acknowledged the positive roles of Britain and France in discussions with Ukraine but stated that there hasn’t been any conversation about China’s involvement in post-war reconstruction efforts. This trip marks Rubio’s second visit to Saudi Arabia as Secretary of State, following prior talks with Russian officials.

Marco Rubio’s visit to Saudi Arabia emphasizes the U.S. aim to resolve Ukraine’s pause in aid through discussions with key Ukrainian officials. While the potential deal on mineral resources is significant, it is not central to the immediate agenda of the talks. The collaborative efforts with allied nations highlight a multifaceted approach to addressing the ongoing conflict, combining strong diplomatic measures with military considerations.
