Konanki and her companions, all from Loudoun County, Virginia, went to a nightclub before heading to the beach at approximately 4 a.m. local time on Thursday. The other women returned to their hotel around 5:55 a.m., captured on security footage, while a man stayed behind with her. He reported they swam but were caught by a large wave.
After returning to the beach, the man subsequently fell asleep on a beach bed and found Konanki missing when he awoke. Security video verified that he returned to his hotel at 9:55 a.m. He is not currently deemed a suspect in the investigation, which is regarded as an accidental disappearance.
Authorities are broadening the search area to include nearby beaches and waterways, as three Dominican officials have suggested Konanki may have drowned. The last sighting of her on camera was around 4:15 a.m. on Thursday.
The investigation involves multiple agencies including the FBI, the U.S. Embassy, and the Dominican National Police. All individuals present during the incident are expected to be questioned again.
