Rodney Hoxobeb is on trial for the murder of farmer Christof Mungunda at Tallismanus. After an argument, Hoxobeb allegedly killed Mungunda using a wooden axe handle and fled with his vehicle. He faces charges including murder and driving under the influence.

The trial of Rodney Hoxobeb, accused of murdering his employer at the Tallismanus settlement in the Omaheke region, is set to begin in the Windhoek High Court on Tuesday. Hoxobeb, 29, allegedly killed farmer Christof Mungunda in September 2022 following an argument and subsequently fled in the victim’s Toyota pick-up. Hoxobeb had worked on Mungunda’s farm since July 2022.

According to the indictment, a conflict arose on September 16, 2022, leading Hoxobeb to disclose to his girlfriend his intention to kill Mungunda. The prosecution claims he used a wooden axe handle to strike Mungunda multiple times as he approached his farmhouse after switching off a generator. When Mungunda was still alive, Hoxobeb reportedly struck him again with a rock.

A postmortem report indicated that Mungunda succumbed to blunt-force trauma to the head at the scene. Following the attack, it is alleged that Hoxobeb stole Mungunda’s vehicle, fleeing with his girlfriend and her cousin. During the escape, Hoxobeb also collided with a co-worker, showing reckless behavior while allegedly intoxicated after drinking alcohol and driving without a license.

Hoxobeb faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravated circumstances, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The case raises significant legal and ethical questions surrounding violence, substance abuse, and the responsibilities of farm employers and employees.

The upcoming trial of Rodney Hoxobeb highlights serious allegations of murder and robbery following an intense altercation with his employer, Christof Mungunda. It emphasizes the judicial system’s handling of violent crimes, particularly those occurring in rural settings. The charges against Hoxobeb encompass a range of serious offenses, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
