On March 10, 2025, Tropical Cyclone Jude made landfall in Mozambique’s Nampula Province, particularly affecting the Mossuril district, around 06:00 local time. This cyclone marks the third such event to strike the region within a span of three months, causing significant disruptions due to heavy winds and rainfall.

The cyclone generated maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h (75 mph) and gusts up to 195 km/h (120 mph). The intense winds, coupled with heavy rainfall, have resulted in widespread damage across the affected regions, particularly impacting infrastructure.

As a result of the storm, around 40,000 households lost electricity when pylons were downed. Additionally, Mozambique Airlines canceled all domestic flights to northern cities pending improved conditions for passengers.

Coastal districts, including Memba, Monapo, Mossuril, Mozambique Island, and Nacala, experienced heavy rainfall, with totals anticipated to reach 200 mm (7.9 inches) within 24 hours of landfall. This has led to severe flooding, destroying and damaging numerous homes, buildings, and roads.

In response to the unfolding situation, the provincial directorate of education mandated the closure of all schools throughout Monday. Thankfully, there have been no reports of fatalities or injuries, although assessments of the cyclone’s overall impact are ongoing.

Tropical Cyclone Jude has caused significant damage in Mozambique through strong winds and heavy rainfall, leading to widespread flooding and infrastructure challenges. Key impacts include power outages for thousands of households and cancellations of domestic flights. As the response continues, assessments are being made to evaluate the full extent of the damage while schools in the province have been closed for safety.
