An Angola man has admitted guilt to manslaughter charges arising from an incident leading to a child’s death. Markus R. Genovese, 53, entered his plea before Judge James Bargnesi in Erie County Court, facing charges including second-degree manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter, as well as leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
The accident occurred on June 8, 2024, at around 8:10 p.m., when Genovese was driving a pickup truck northbound on Lake Shore Road in Hamburg. He collided with an SUV that had stopped to make a turn. At the time, Genovese was reportedly under the influence of substances and did not hold a valid driver’s license.
After the crash, Genovese fled the scene but was later apprehended in nearby woods by law enforcement and taken to the Erie County Medical Center. In the victim’s SUV, there were two children, one of whom, an 8-year-old boy, suffered fatal injuries, while a 4-year-old boy sustained injuries but was treated and released from the hospital.
Genovese is facing a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years, with sentencing scheduled for May 12 at 9:30 a.m. He remains in custody without bail. District Attorney Michael Keane praised the Hamburg Police Department and their Accident Investigation Unit for their diligent work on the case, which was handled by Assistant District Attorneys Christopher M. McCarthy and Natasha G. Greenan.
