Bangladeshi Expat Shot Dead in South Africa: A Tragic Incident

Kamrul Islam, a 33-year-old Bangladeshi businessman, was shot dead in a robbery in South Africa on Thursday night. Eyewitnesses reported that he was attacked while closing his shop, leading to his death. The family plans to return his body to Bangladesh and is seeking government assistance.
On Thursday night (Bangladesh time), a Bangladeshi businessman named Kamrul Islam was shot and killed by armed robbers in Vepener, Free State Province, South Africa. At 9 PM local time, the assailants targeted his shop as he was closing for the night, looting cash and valuables before forcing him outside. They shot Kamrul in the left side of his chest, resulting in immediate death.
Kamrul Islam, 33, was the son of the late Abdul Mannan Miah and hailed from Karmullahpur village in Feni district. His elder brother, Kamruzzaman, confirmed the tragic incident, mentioning that Kamrul had lived in South Africa for 12 years, initially working before establishing his own business. He had intended to return to Bangladesh soon.
Eyewitness reports indicate that two Black robbers attacked Kamrul’s shop, believing he had more money in his car. Following the shooting, Kamruzzaman expressed the family’s efforts to communicate with relatives in South Africa to facilitate the return of Kamrul’s body. He has also requested assistance from the government regarding the matter.
Meanwhile, SM Azharul Islam, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Daganbhuiyan, noted that he is aware of the incident and efforts are being made to reach the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the situation.
The death of Kamrul Islam in South Africa highlights the ongoing security concerns for expatriates. The family is making arrangements to bring his body back to Bangladesh, while local officials seek government support to facilitate this process. Insufficient safety measures resulted in this tragedy, underlining the need for enhanced security for foreign nationals in high-risk areas.
