AmaWaterways Delays AmaMagdalena Colombia Launch to Early April

AmaWaterways has rescheduled the debut of the AmaMagdalena in Colombia to early April due to minor delays. Passengers are still visiting Colombia while waiting for the cruise. The company has also expanded its presence in Barranquilla with new hires and an office. Future itineraries for 2025-2027 have been announced, focusing on Colombian cultural experiences.
AmaWaterways has postponed the launch of the AmaMagdalena cruise to Colombia, now set for early April instead of the original date of March 15. Co-founder Kristin Karst stated the delay is due to minor issues that need resolution. The company intends to operate two vessels on the Magdalena River, which has not hosted passenger cruises for over 50 years. AmaWaterways announced its plans for the Magdalena in 2021.
Customers who originally booked the AmaMagdalena have opted to still travel to Colombia. They are currently exploring the region using excursion boats and staying in Cartagena. Their visits include the Palenque town, established by African descendants escaping slavery, and Barranquilla, known for its vibrant Carnival celebrations, as noted by Karst.
In preparation for the launch, AmaWaterways recently hired eight cruise managers for both the AmaMagdalena and the AmaMelodia, which is expected to begin service in June. Additionally, the company has opened a new office in Barranquilla, employing around ten staff members, according to Karst.
Originally planned for a November sailing, the AmaMagdalena’s launch faced delays, first moving to March 15. CEO Rudi Schreiner remarked that the complexities of introducing a new river cruise line are inherent in their pioneering efforts. “Opening a new river to the world is not easy,” he stated, emphasizing the adventurous nature of their offerings.
AmaWaterways will provide two distinct itineraries in Colombia: the Magic of Colombia and the Wonders of Colombia. These seven-night cruises are available for booking in 2025, 2026, and 2027, with itineraries starting and finishing in either Barranquilla or Cartagena. The AmaWaterways website features a scheduled sailing for the Magic of Colombia on April 5.
AmaWaterways has delayed the inauguration of its AmaMagdalena cruise to early April, allowing for final preparations and staff hiring. Travelers previously booked on the AmaMagdalena continue to explore Colombia through excursions. The company is committed to offering innovative river cruise experiences despite challenges. Their future itineraries feature multiple sailing dates, demonstrating a strong investment in Colombian tourism and local hires.
