Businessman Accused of Defrauding Police Officer Over Vehicle Auction Simulations

George Adu-Twum, a businessman, allegedly swindled a police officer GH¢72,000 under the pretense of securing two auctioned vehicles. He has pleaded not guilty and was granted bail, with future court proceedings mandated. An investigation revealed he refunded GH¢25,000 of the money collected.
George Adu-Twum, a 46-year-old businessman, stands accused of defrauding a police officer of GH¢72,000 by falsely promising him two auctioned vehicles. The incident, which allegedly occurred in 2021, led the accused to appear in court where he pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. The Circuit Court, overseen by Mr. Isaac Addo, granted Adu-Twum bail set at GH¢75,000 with two sureties and scheduled the next hearing for April 7, 2025, instructing the prosecution to follow disclosure protocols.
The prosecutor, Chief Inspector Daniel Ofori-Appiah, stated that the complainant, a police officer living at Weija SCC in Accra, sought a Toyota Pickup and Hyundai i30 for his relatives. After being introduced to Adu-Twum by a friend, the complainant claimed that he met the accused at Abelemkpe, where Adu-Twum indicated the vehicles available for auction and pressed for immediate payment due to other interested parties.
The total sum of GH¢72,000 was gathered by Adu-Twum, with GH¢40,000 paid at his office in Abelemkpe and GH¢32,000 transferred at the complainant’s office at the Ministries. The accused assured the complainant that the vehicles would be available within a week. However, after receiving the funds, Adu-Twum disappeared until his arrest on January 15, 2025. During the investigation, he reportedly refunded GH¢25,000 to the complainant.
The case against George Adu-Twum highlights alleged fraudulent actions where he is accused of swindling a police officer out of GH¢72,000 under false pretenses for two auctioned vehicles. Despite his claims of innocence and the provision of partial refunds, the matter remains pending, underscoring the importance of legal processes in resolving such disputes.
