Zia Chishti, a Pakistani-American businessman, won a defamation case against The Telegraph, which has issued a formal apology for publishing false allegations against him. The newspaper will also pay damages and legal costs. Chishti emphasizes his innocence and hopes for justice from the U.S. Congress. His company’s financial struggles followed the allegations, despite his previous accolades.
Zia Chishti, a Pakistani-American businessman and recipient of the Sitara-e-Imtiaz award, has successfully won a defamation case against The Telegraph at the Royal Court of Justice in London. The newspaper has admitted that prior allegations published against him were false and misleading, resulting in a formal apology that will be featured in both print and online editions.
The case originated from sexual harassment claims made by Tatiana Spottiswood, Chishti’s former employee. Before the trial commenced, The Telegraph chose an out-of-court settlement, acknowledging its misjudgment in asserting the allegations were true and in the public interest.
As a result of the settlement, The Telegraph will issue a permanent apology at the top of the original articles that contained the defamation. They will also pay damages to Chishti and cover his legal expenses. Outside of court, Chishti expressed his gratitude, stating that he never committed the acts he was accused of, and emphasized the hardships faced by his family during the ordeal.
Chishti has called for the U.S. Congress to provide him with an opportunity to clear his name, similar to the chance given to his accuser. He resigned from leadership roles in his companies following the allegations. Notably, his company Afiniti declared bankruptcy three years later, while his other venture, The Resource Group, is facing financial challenges and declining stock value.
In 2018, Chishti received Pakistan’s prestigious Sitara-e-Imtiaz for his contributions to the fields of business and technology, highlighting his significance in his professional domains.
Zia Chishti’s victory in his defamation case against The Telegraph marks a significant step in restoring his reputation following false allegations. The newspaper’s admission of wrongdoing and its commitment to a formal apology reflect the importance of accountability in journalism. Chishti’s ongoing struggles post-allegations emphasize the profound impacts such claims can have on an individual’s personal and professional life, while his hope for a clear naming opportunity in Congress suggests a desire for justice.
