GONE Webinar: Malawi Approaches Elimination of Onchocerciasis

The upcoming GONE webinar will focus on Malawi’s substantial progress towards eliminating onchocerciasis. Participants can expect updates from the national onchocerciasis expert committee as Malawi prepares for the Stop MDA initiative. Thanks to the consistent efforts from the Ministry of Health and the community, Malawi is set to evaluate disease interruption in endemic regions. The nation aims to eliminate not only onchocerciasis but also other neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by 2030.
The webinar agenda includes a welcome address by Dr. Didier Bakajika from WHO/AFRO/ESPEN, followed by insights from Mr. Laston Sitima, who will discuss Malawi’s public health advancements against onchocerciasis. There will also be roundtable discussions featuring partners and neighboring countries, highlighting lessons learned and strategies for cross-border collaboration.
In addition to addressing onchocerciasis, Malawi has successfully eliminated traumas such as trachoma in 2022, leprosy, and lymphatic filariasis in preceding years. The integrated approach towards tackling NTDs has been instrumental in these successes. Participants will engage in a Q&A session and the webinar will be offered in English, French, and Portuguese.
