A Madagascar senior underwent a life-saving stent graft procedure for an abdominal aortic aneurysm caused by chronic smoking, performed at Masina Hospital in Mumbai. After suffering for two months, he sought treatment in India due to inadequate healthcare in Madagascar. The minimally invasive procedure resulted in a quick recovery, highlighting the importance of early intervention for aortic aneurysms.

A senior citizen from Madagascar diagnosed with a critical abdominal aortic aneurysm underwent a successful stent procedure at Masina Hospital in Mumbai after suffering severe abdominal pain for over two months. This condition arose following a fall from his bed and was linked to his chronic smoking habit. With limited medical resources in Madagascar, the patient’s family sought advanced treatment in India for better healthcare options.

Upon arrival, medical professionals confirmed the diagnosis of an abdominal aortic aneurysm, characterized by a weakened bulge in the aorta. In order to repair this potentially fatal condition, the doctors employed a minimally invasive stent graft procedure, which facilitated a quick and efficient recovery while alleviating pain.

An aortic aneurysm can emerge from factors such as high blood pressure, smoking, and genetics, and may lead to severe complications including rupture. Initial symptoms often go unnoticed until the aneurysm reaches a critical stage, making awareness crucial. Patients can experience intense abdominal or back pain as a primary symptom.

The stent graft procedure is executed by inserting a small device through the artery, thereby strengthening the weakened part of the aorta. This method is safer than traditional open surgery, as it reduces complications and minimizes recovery time. The operation lasted two hours, with the patient discharged three days later on March 5.

Dr. Ashank Bansal, the vascular interventional radiologist involved in the case, noted the likely influence of smoking on the patient’s condition and explained that the stent graft method allowed precise placement without damaging surrounding structures. Fatema Firdos Djaver, the patient’s daughter, expressed gratitude for the exemplary care, stating that their decision to seek treatment in India significantly improved her father’s health.

This case highlights the critical importance of timely medical intervention for conditions like aortic aneurysms, particularly for patients with risk factors such as chronic smoking. The minimally invasive stent graft procedure represents a modern advancement in treating such life-threatening conditions, offering quicker recoveries and reducing surgery-related risks. The experiences of both the patient and his family underscore the necessity for accessible advanced healthcare options, especially in regions with limited medical facilities.
