Mozambique: Youth Shot During Police Action Amid Post-Election Protests
A young man was shot dead by police in Maputo during unrest linked to Mozambique’s post-election situation, leading to protests. Authorities faced backlash for alleged excessive force as tensions escalated on a day marking the ‘Heroes of the Mozambican People.’ Former candidate Venâncio Mondlane called for remembrance and justice amidst ongoing violence from the elections that has resulted in numerous deaths.
On Tuesday, a young man was fatally shot in Maputo, exacerbating Mozambique’s ongoing post-election unrest. Locals blamed police for the violence following an incident where officers allegedly fired on young people in the Casa Branca neighborhood. The event coincided with a celebration of the so-called “Day of the True Heroes of the Mozambican People,” established by former candidate Venâncio Mondlane.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene as police entered Casa Branca, reportedly shooting one youth in the head and deploying tear gas. A masked young man stated, “It’s a normal holiday; nobody closed the road. Suddenly, the Municipal Council and the UIR show up and start firing without asking anything”. Another participant mentioned that the victim was shot upon leaving his house, prompting a violent protest.
The situation escalated as youths carried the deceased to the N4 highway, blocking traffic. Police responded with tear gas and live ammunition in an attempt to disperse the gathering. The protestors endured heightened tensions for an hour before law enforcement relocated the victim’s body, which was ultimately taken by the National Criminal Investigation Service amid community resistance.
Venâncio Mondlane, contesting the 9 October election results, marked 18 March as a day of remembrance. Although an unusual Tuesday traffic scene occurred, it was marred by protests and unrest. Previously, police enforced orders to disperse peaceful demonstrations, recalling an incident from 18 March 2023.
Today, people gathered to honor social intervention rap artist Azagaia and Elvino Dias, a figure known for legal advocacy. Both are remembered for their tragic deaths linked to post-election violence, which has claimed nearly 400 lives according to NGOs. Mondlane regards these individuals, alongside historical figures like Eduardo Mondlane and Samora Machel, as “national heroes.”
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing social unrest and violence in Mozambique following recent elections, particularly focusing on police conduct during demonstrations. As calls for recognition of fallen figures gain traction, the situation remains tenuous, with concerns around safety and civil rights continuing to rise amidst calls for justice.
