While he has been designated as a person of interest by Dominican authorities and is currently under police protection with his passport seized, investigators from Loudoun County, Virginia, are skeptical of his involvement.
Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Thomas Julia mentioned that after interviewing Riibe, they found him cooperative and do not hold him responsible for her disappearance. Julia noted, “Is he in any way complicit in any of this? And even if he’s not complicit in any way, and we don’t believe he is, we’ve interviewed him, and he was very cooperative.” Riibe reportedly kissed Konanki while swimming before he fell asleep on the beach and lost track of her.
Key questions remain about the timing between when Riibe last saw Konanki and when he passed out. Julia emphasized the importance of understanding the timeline of events, stating, “Was it a moment? Was it seconds? And that correspondingly bears on… could she have had a chance to get out… and somehow disappeared without his knowledge?” This timeline is crucial in ascertaining whether Konanki drowned or possibly experienced foul play.
Despite the sheriff’s office’s position that Riibe was not directly involved, there is a push for the Dominican authorities to complete their investigation. Julia urged for any outstanding evidence, such as surveillance footage or analysis of phones, to be assessed. He pointed out, “We think this investigation and this family is owed the completion of the investigation.”
Konanki’s parents requested that local officials declare her dead while urging authorities to cease inquiries into Riibe, who they supported based on his cooperation with the investigation. They expressed, “The individual last seen with her is cooperating with the investigation, and no evidence of foul play has been found.” Initial assumptions of drowning have shifted as the possibility of foul play has emerged, adding complexity to the ongoing investigation.
