Bee Group Launches Electric Motorcycle Initiative in Cameroon
Bee Group launches a million-dollar project for electric motorcycles in Cameroon, featuring 40 e-motorcycles and charging stations. The pilot phase begins in July 2025, aiming to enhance urban mobility while reducing costs and pollution. Supported by government incentives, the project plans to promote local production and expand to other African nations.
Bee Group is undertaking a significant electric mobility initiative in Cameroon, collaborating with Tembo Electronical Technology. With a substantial investment of RM4.5 million (CFA610 million), the pilot phase is set to commence in July 2025, featuring 40 electric motorcycles and their associated charging stations.
The pilot phase will initiate in June 2025 with the deployment of 40 electric motorcycles across urban centers such as Douala, Yaoundé, Bertoua, and Bafoussam. Each city will receive 10 motorcycles, equipped with four batteries each, ensuring continual operation with two batteries actively utilized while the others charge at stations located at TotalEnergies and Ola Energy sites.
Post-trial, Bee Group plans to import an additional 100 motorcycles and aims to launch local production by 2026. This step is projected to generate local employment, lower importation costs, and foster technological transfer to Cameroon. CEO Patrick Timani stressed that the initiative supports economic growth and positions Cameroon as an essential hub for electric mobility in Africa.
The Cameroonian government is supporting this project, with backing from 3S Motors and TotalEnergies. New legislation implemented in 2025 exempts electric vehicles from a 12.5% excise duty and reduces taxes on new motorcycles, batteries, and charging stations by 50% for two years, making electric vehicle adoption more affordable and fostering sustainable mobility solutions.
This initiative not only aims for cost reductions but also seeks to lower transport fares and pollution levels in urban areas, specifically in Douala, where mototaxis dominate transport. Bee Group anticipates that the transition to electric motorcycles will enhance urban mobility and contribute to local economic development while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Once established in Cameroon, Bee Group intends to extend its operations to other African countries. This initiative symbolizes a remarkable advancement towards innovative, job-creating, and environmentally responsible urban transport systems on the continent.
