Kenyan Police Officer Injured in Haiti Amid Ongoing Security Challenges

A Kenyan police officer was shot and injured during a security operation in Haiti. The officer is in stable condition after receiving treatment. This incident follows the death of another Kenyan officer less than a month prior.
On March 18, 2025, a Kenyan police officer was shot and seriously injured during a security operation in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, as part of the Multinational Security Support Mission. The incident occurred in Kenscoff, within the Belot area, where the officer was attacked by criminal gangs.
The mission spokesman, Jack Ombaka, confirmed that the officer was immediately transported to ASPEN Level 2 Hospital. He stated that the officer is currently in stable condition and emphasized that efforts are underway to apprehend the gang responsible for the shooting, though the officer’s identity has not been disclosed.
This incident marks the second shooting of a Kenyan police officer during the ongoing mission, which commenced deployment in June 2024. Previously, on February 23, 2025, Constable Samuel Tompoi Kaetuai was fatally shot by gangs in the western Segur-Savien region, making him the first Kenyan casualty in this mission.
Kaetuai died from a single gunshot wound to the head, as indicated by an autopsy. In total, Kenya has deployed around 800 police officers to Haiti under a United Nations-backed mission to assist in combating gang violence. Other countries like Jamaica, Guatemala, and El Salvador have also contributed troops to support Haiti’s national police.
Following Kaetuai’s death, Inspector General of the National Police Service Douglas Kanja visited the grieving family in Naserian Village, Kajiado East Sub-County, expressing condolences and support during this difficult time.
The recent shooting of a Kenyan police officer in Haiti highlights ongoing violence in the region. The Kenyan police deployment aims to combat gang activity, following the tragic death of another officer just weeks prior. With international support from multiple countries, efforts continue to stabilize Haiti and ensure the safety of the deployed personnel.
